While there’s no right place to put a pantry, this essential aspect of your kitchen remodel is a matter of determining your specific household needs and working with what you have. Here’s a guide to help you make an informed decision.
The Ideal Location for a Pantry
According to designers, the ideal spot for a pantry is within steps of the primary kitchen work zones. The idea is for you to be able to prepare and cook with ease, based on where the pantry, oven, sink and other appliances are placed.
Finding which location is the best fit starts with figuring out the arrangement of the work zones and the kitchen’s primary layout and flow. Appliances usually come first and from this work zone, plenty of space can be created for an appropriate-size pantry, which could take advantage of corner spaces and other creative storage.
The Size of the Pantry
The placement of the pantry usually dictates its size. For kitchen remodelers, however, there’s no such thing as a perfect size or placement. While a walk-in or closet-like pantry works for many families, limitations in space may force others to create smaller, more efficiently designed pantry in a different location. Also, in a kitchen renovation, there are a few choices on where to place your pantry.
With this in mind, you may have to rule out a single pantry. Instead, consider multiple pantries dedicated to different food items. Make sure that the pantry for flour, spices, oil and other ingredients is within easy reach as you do meal prep. Reserve seldom-used appliances and other bulky items for pantries that are farther from your primary work zone. Think of the upper cabinet next to the cooktop as one of your pantries.
