5 Vintage Bathroom Design Trends

Looking to update your bathroom? Try fixtures and fittings from yesteryear! The last few years have seen a resurgence of everything retro in interior design, and the bathroom is one of the best areas of your home to try a few old-school trends. As one of the area’s leading bathroom contractors, we feel that the following vintage bathroom trends deserve a comeback.

1. Washstand

A simple, vintage-style washstand is a great way to introduce an interesting element into your bathroom. It can then be paired with a faucet with delicate features and porcelain handles. As for the piping underneath, exposing it opens up your bathroom space further. However, since there’ll be no storage, installing cabinetry near the standalone sink.

2. Hardware Finishes

Swap out your vanity hardware and fixtures with vintage hardware. Think eye-catching finishes for your taps, showerheads, cabinet drawers and knobs, like copper. For a more glamorous look for the whole space, try brass. It will instantly make your bathroom look more retro.

3. Checkerboard Floor

The checkerboard pattern was a staple design element in the 1920s and ‘30s. This pattern, also known as “harlequin,” is seeing a re-emergence in modern interior design, thanks to its versatility and visual interest. If you want to include it in your bathroom remodel, forego the linoleum floor used almost a century ago. Instead, go with ceramic checkerboard tile; it is more durable and a breeze to clean.

4. Clawfoot Bathtub

The freestanding bathtub is the epitome of luxury in bathroom design. Made of stone, metal or acrylic, the clawfoot variety exudes elegant Victorian-era features that make it the ultimate throwback statement piece. It is not without its downsides, however, as spillage is usually an issue. A lot of space is a requirement as well, so be sure to plan accordingly.

5. Wallpaper

The wallpaper that for years has been scraped off during renovations is becoming cool again. Every room in the home, including the bathroom, can feature vintage-inspired wallpaper with a contemporary touch to give the living space a special, jewel-box feel. You can’t go wrong with a bright floral or palm print or even an eye-catching geometric pattern.
