Installing a new backsplash is one of the easiest ways to breathe new life into your kitchen. Although countertops are usually the centerpiece in kitchens, a good backsplash can also be an interesting focal point. It can add color and personality to a space that’s mainly utilitarian.
To give you an idea of how you can get started with your backsplash design, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Ogden discusses some of the basics to consider.
Size
Find out the amount of space available for the backsplash. On average, the size of a backsplash ranges from 16 to 18 inches between the countertop and kitchen cabinets. However, if you want to increase the height of your backsplash, you can go higher at 20 to 24 inches. Take note that this will require raising cabinets, which could make them harder to reach.
Don’t forget to take the overall size of your kitchen into account. If you have a small kitchen, a 24-inch-high backsplash may look odd. Consult with kitchen remodeling experts to determine the appropriate size for your backsplash.
Countertop
When designing a backsplash, remodelers typically recommend starting with the countertop. It’s generally easier to base your backsplash design on your countertop rather than the other way around. That’s why, if you’re swapping out an old countertop too, you should select a new countertop before exploring design ideas for your backsplash.
Tile Accent Design
Take your backsplash to the next level by creating an accent design above your range or cooktop. This usually results in a backsplash-within-a-backsplash effect, and could be as simple as using a different pattern or color or an elaborate or intricate mosaic with a tile border. Use your vent hood or built-in microwave as a sizing guide.
Grout Color
You can go with the classic white grout or try bolder colors. Dark grout has been gaining popularity in the past few years, but the clean look of white is still an attractive option for many homeowners. You can seek advice from remodeling contractors or kitchen designers to help you make a decision.
Outlets & Switches
It’s common for electrical outlets and switches to be positioned in the middle of the wall, which could potentially interfere with a backsplash. In this case, you can opt to have the outlets moved to another area, such as under the top cabinets. However, if you haven’t planned on moving the outlets, you can faux paint the cover plates instead. You can also buy cover plates that match the color of your backsplash.
