Vetting kitchen or bathroom remodel contractors for your home remodeling project is one of the most important parts of the project. Getting a list of prospective service providers isn’t the most difficult step. It’s finding a company you can trust that can be the biggest challenge.
Doing a quick Google search for remodeling contractors will return hundreds of results. Luckily, there are ways to narrow down this list and help you get your project underway. Keep an eye out for these red flags whenever you’re dealing with general contracting companies.
- They’re pressuring you to sign a contract. Dishonest contractors will often use promotions, bonuses and discounts to entice you to sign a contract with them right away. They’ll even go as far as telling you directly that these discounts are only available if you sign with them today. This is a common red flag.
- They’re asking for upfront payment. It’s normal for companies to request a “good faith” deposit for a project, even those as simple as installing kitchen cabinets. However, this deposit should not exceed 10% of the total project cost. Be suspicious if a contractor wants half the payment upfront, and even more so if they’re asking for the total.
- They make you feel uneasy. Sometimes, even with all the paperwork covered and all questions answered, your instinct just tells you that a contractor isn’t a good fit for your project. It could be that you’re not comfortable with them being in your home or your “gut” just doesn’t approve. Whatever your reason, it’s always best to go with a company that you’re 100% confident and comfortable with.
