Color-Blocking Your New Kitchen: Tips & Tricks

Color-blocking is a technique interior designers use to break up a space with color. A rectangular wall, for instance, can be divided into smaller squares and rectangles of varied shades. If you’re planning to implement color-block elements in your kitchen renovation, here are a few tips to consider.

Keep It Minimal

If you want to take a lighter approach to color-blocking in your overall kitchen design, consider brightly colored appliances or furniture. You can also apply the same principle using your kitchenware or other home decor placed around your kitchen, which can make a big difference in your interior design. This latter approach is easier to implement since you can easily replace inexpensive furnishings if you think a different color scheme suits you better.

A Colored Base & White Accents

A common approach to color-blocking is having white upper cabinets and walls balancing brightly colored base cabinets. This makes a statement that isn’t too overpowering. White is a good color to compliment bright colors as it helps keep the colors from being too over-the-top. You can also choose to switch the design and make white your base cabinet color. This combination won’t go out of style anytime soon!

Use Odd Numbers

If you’re going to apply color-blocking to an empty wall in your kitchen design, a good tip is to go with an odd number of colors. This means using two main colors and one neutral color (i.e. white or black). You do this by dividing the wall into a few sections of neutral rectangles and colored squares. Natural architectural breaks such as cabinets or shelves can be used to define the blocks of color. Bright colors can pop out over a black or white base, but if you think that the approach is too strong, softer tones can also deliver the same visual impact more subtly.

Black Is Also a Good Color

If you’re looking for a more modern look with a twist, switch to a black or dark color as the base for your brighter colors. Black can provide a strong but simple backdrop that can enhance almost any bright color you choose. The contrast between the dark and bright colors results in a more dramatic effect for your overall kitchen remodel.
