Wet Rooms, Part 2: Design Considerations

Wet rooms are growing in popularity because they are versatile, easy to clean, and stunning when properly installed. They are barrier-free, making them safer and more convenient for older adults or people with limited mobility.

In general, a wet room can increase the value of your home. To maximize its benefits, you must consider a few important factors when designing your space. A bathroom remodeler near me discusses some of them in this post.

Functional Layout

The shower area should be open or partially enclosed by a glass screen or a half-tiled wall. But instead of clear glass, designers recommend using a translucent or sandblasted glass fixed panel. Luxury fixtures can turn a space into a relaxing, sophisticated haven. A large overhead shower, for instance, will not only add to the appeal of your wet room; it will also keep the water contained within the shower area. Combining overhead and rail showers is an excellent choice if you don’t want your hair to get wet every day.

Lighting

Windows are an essential element of bathroom design. They provide natural lighting, which creates a relaxing atmosphere in a wet room. However, to keep the space private, opaque glass is recommended for its block-out properties. Remember that in a wet room, light fixtures must be waterproofed. Power outlets and heated towel ladders must have a strategic placement. You must carefully consider the location of the towel rail as well. It’s not just for the sake of having dry towels. Bacteria, after all, can thrive wherever there is water.

Shower Surround

Although the lack of a surround is ideal for smaller bathrooms, the shower tray must be large enough to allow for efficient drainage. If you have the space, consider using screens or partial enclosures to keep other areas dry. Consider frameless showers as these are usually easier to keep clean.

Under-Floor Heating

When getting a bathroom quote, you might want to mention to the contractor that you’re interested in underfloor heating too. Even with a proper slope that directs water to the drain, moisture will always be left on the floor, especially after showering. Under-floor heating takes care of this quickly and provides a more comfortable bathing experience. It helps to eliminate the risk of slipping and falling by preventing cold feet during winter morning showers and drastically reducing the potential for mold development.

Ventilation

Wet rooms often have high moisture and humidity levels, so proper ventilation is critical. Preliminary design, on the other hand, can result in poor ventilation or unintended heat loss. A combination of windows and exhaust fans is the most effective way to ventilate a wet room. Windows provide good passive ventilation while exhaust fans deal with humidity.
