4 Bathroom Layout Dos and Don’ts to Keep in Mind

There are many things to consider when planning a bathroom renovation, such as finding the right storage solutions and determining the best fixtures to incorporate into the space. However, one thing that can make or break the rest of its design is its layout. Without it, you won’t be able to make the most of your bathroom’s aesthetic appeal and functionality. Check out these dos and don’ts of planning a bathroom layout from your trusted home remodeler, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Northwest DC.

1. Do Add a Lot of Light

While a candlelit bath at night seems fantastic, you should still invest in adequate lighting for your bathroom. Make sure to find the right balance between natural and artificial lighting. Bring in as much sunlight into the space with big windows. Alternatively, you may install a skylight for all-day illumination. Come nighttime, you’ll want your bathroom to have enough lighting – ambient lighting for the entire space, task lighting for your vanity, and accent lighting for your focal points.

2. Don’t Go for Oversized Features

Sizing is everything when it comes to bathroom fixtures. When choosing a bathtub or vanity, make sure it is the right size relative to the bathroom itself. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a space that looks small and cramped. Always take this into account when planning your bathroom remodel.

3. Do Have Sufficient Storage

Storage is a crucial aspect of your bathroom that you shouldn’t overlook, especially when designing its layout for your remodel. After all, having too many items on your vanity counter can easily make the space look cluttered. Consider a floor-to-ceiling cabinet if you are running out of space. Or, take advantage of your bathroom’s negative wall spaces for other custom storage solutions, like a niche within the shower enclosure or shelving over the toilet.

Don’t Forget About Existing Infrastructure

While it may be good to redo everything in your bathroom, you must never forget about the existing infrastructure. You can rework the plumbing points to move to an area you want, but this will cost you a lot more money. The money spent redoing the infrastructure can be spent on better fixtures, changes in your tiles and wall paint, or improvements in bathroom storage.
