5 Things You Must Have in Your Home Office

Working from home has become ubiquitous in the last couple of years, and the home office has become a must-have. It should help improve your productivity and must be tailored to your needs at work. Local home renovator DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Northwest Arkansas discusses the things you must have in your home office.

1. Natural Lighting

Let’s begin with the room itself. You’ll want to have your home office in a room that receives a lot of natural light. It doesn’t have to be a wall of windows, but it has to be bright enough that you can work without needing to use electrical lighting during the day. Natural light helps improve productivity but also promotes regular sleep cycles and stress reduction.

2. Desk

Your desk is the center of your home office, and it’s important to choose one that you will be comfortable working on. Consider your work equipment – computers, paper, pens, and many others – and find a desk big enough for them without looking cluttered. Peripherals such as printers, as well as documents, can be placed on a standalone or wall-mounted cabinet.

Look for a desk with adjustable height, so you can switch between standing and sitting instead of being stuck in a single position all day. It will also make for a more ergonomic table height: ideally, your forearms should be parallel to the ground and at the same level as the desktop. If you must have a fixed-position desk, ask your home remodeler for custom options.

3. Chair

Your chair needs to be ergonomic and comfortable. You should be able to adjust your seat height so you can position your elbows as described above. Look for other features like back and leg support. If possible, try out chairs before you buy them.

4. Cable Management System

Your home office will be host several wired connections, including power connections, broadband internet, and various peripherals. Instead of buying off-the-shelf cable management boxes and brackets, you can have your home remodeler include wall and floor panels that conceal cable runs. In addition to giving your home office a much more organized look, it will also help prevent anyone from accidentally tugging or tripping on the wires.

5. Office Storage

Depending on what your job needs, you may need no more than a small filing cabinet, or you may need floor-to-ceiling shelves for documents and reference material. Consider how much storage your office will need and include this in your home office remodeling plans. Another benefit of having tall shelves filled with books and documents is that they make great backdrops for video conferences.
