The Dos & Don’ts of Opening Up a Traditional Floor Plan

Older homes can be challenging to modernize. Fortunately, if you opt for a remodel, opening up a traditional floor plan can allow your property to be more conducive to modern living. In this post, a local home renovator shares do’s and don’ts to guide you through this process.

Do’s

  • Assess how you want your area to be used. First, make a list of elements you will need in your space. Determine whether you want to prioritize a working area or a place where you can entertain more guests.  Do not forget to consider practicality and functionality.
  • Consider linking to the outdoors. Maximize your area by creating a better connection to your yard. According to professionals, a nice open kitchen with a wall of windows can also help open up the connection between the home and the yard.
  • Get more windows. While some older homes have windows in awkward places that don’t always match modern furniture placement, consider new window options that can allow you to put a couch or a bed against a solid wall.
  • Organize your things. Most designers remind homeowners to utilize designated areas for particular items. Invest in shelving and cabinetry for storage, ensuring a neat space without clutter.

Don’ts

  • Disregard the existing infrastructure. Some essential components like plumbing and structural beams are hidden within the walls. Any home remodeler will remind you to incorporate these components into your project. It’s much easier to work with them than to relocate them.
  • Fail to prepare. Always plan ahead. You can start by considering the layout of the space and whether it makes sense for your lifestyle. Seek assistance from experts whenever necessary.
  • Forget about lighting. Light is an essential factor, both in terms of natural illumination and the placement of fixtures. In design, it’s critical to think about which rooms are in your open plan design, their uses and how often each room is used.
