Color-blocking is a design technique that has been popular among interior designers in recent years. It uses combinations of color and simple, graphic shapes to create a striking impact. Our kitchen design expert discusses how you can incorporate this aesthetic from modern-day fashion into your kitchen below.
Planning a Color-Blocked Kitchen
Color-blocking uses pairings of colors that are opposites on the color wheel (although some designs use subtle color variations) to make interesting visual effects. When you start planning a color-blocked kitchen, go with an odd number of colors. Oftentimes the choice is two main colors and one neutral color. Divide a wall into a few sections or vertical and horizontal rectangles, along with shapes of color. For a bold effect, use complementary colors such as green and red and blue and orange. If you prefer a less dramatic interior, incorporate softer hues of different colors. You also also use an appliance, shelf or cabinet as an architectural break to separate the blocks of color.
Don’t Stop With the Walls
While walls are usually the biggest use of the color-blocking technique, you do not have to limit yourself to colorful walls. You can use the ceilings and floors too. Just be mindful you do not produce a conflicting arrangement. For example, you can design an accent wall using the color-blocking technique and select one of the colors for the ceiling and one for the floor. Also accessorize with geometric patterns in furniture.
Color-Blocking Ideas for Your Kitchen
Get inspired by these color-blocking ideas to help your space stand out:
- Paint your kitchen cabinets in different colors. Experiment with color-blocking in your kitchen by painting your cabinet doors and drawer fronts in a blend of colors. With a simple project that can be completed over a weekend, you can color-block your way to a freshly designed kitchen in very little time.
- Introduce a colored backsplash or island. A backsplash or island in an eye-popping shade is a no-brainer when it comes to creating a focal point in the kitchen. Take it up a notch and add these two elements in coordinating tones to create a uniform look.
- Pair different types of wood. Color-blocking is not all about vibrant paint. If you want to decorate your kitchen in a neutral palette, design your cabinetry using different woods. Orient the panels to make sure the grains run in the same direction.
