Important Features That Make a Bathroom Accessible

For those that are unfamiliar with accessibility in design, it is the process in which the needs of people with disabilities are the top consideration. Also known as universal or usable design, it results in spaces that are easier for everyone to use. If you are in need of mobility remodeling work in your bathroom, here are some key features that you should include.

Accessible Improvements

Wide Doorways

An accessible bathroom must have a doorway wide enough to accommodate wheelchair users so that they can easily roll in and out. The door should be made of lightweight materials so that it can be opened with a minimal amount of force. Accessible doors are also designed to swing outwards in case of emergencies.

A Raised Toilet Seat

A higher toilet seat makes it easier for people with mobility problems to stand up and sit down. Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design state that the height of an accessible toilet should be 17 and 19 inches measured from the floor to the top of the toilet seat.

Grab Bars

These are also standard for an accessible toilet. Grab bars positioned in strategic positions help a user get on and off the toilet without having to grab onto the toilet itself.

Within-Reach Amenities

A successful bathroom remodel with accessibility in mind should have all amenities within easy reach. Things like the toilet paper, soap, linens and other amenities must be positioned so that people in wheelchairs or using a walker don’t have to strain trying to reach them.

Non-Slip Floors

While we believe that non-slip flooring is a great thing to have in any bathroom, it becomes doubly important when you’re designing with accessibility in mind. Consider installing a textured tile with a good grip or cork flooring.

Emergency Alarm Cord

An emergency alarm cord positioned near the toilet ensures that anyone who falls or needs assistance can easily call for help. The off button should also be near the toilet so that a family member will have to check on anyone inside before turning it off.
