Tips to Keep in Mind for a Living Room Remodel

The living room is one of the first spaces you see when you enter your home. If it’s been leaving you less than wowed lately, maybe it’s time to start thinking about a refresh! A warm and inviting living room can really set the tone for the rest of your home. Below are some important living room design tips from top interior home remodeling expert DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Madison.

Choose Neutral Colors

Neutrals may sound like a too-safe choice, but they make an excellent canvas for a space that you’ll likely want to decorate to suit different seasons and special occasions. Think ivory, gray, beige and shades of white—you’ll be hard-pressed to find design elements that clash with these neutrals. Once your base is set, it’s easy to add more striking elements to your room: statement fixtures and furnishings, bolder colors, rich patterns and textures, etc. Whatever style you want in your living room, neutral colors make a great foundation.

Incorporate Layers

Layers make a space feel warmer, more comfortable and more put-together. They can also draw attention away from parts of the room that feel a little off-balance, like an awkwardly situated window. Layers can be in the form of different materials, textures, patterns or finishes. Some examples are a leather sofa with plush knit throws, or a lucite coffee table on top of a distressed antique rug.

Be Picky With Flooring

Interior remodeling contractors are well aware that floors are the bedrock of most successful interior designs. The floor can bring harmony to a host of decorative elements that may not otherwise work together. Beyond that, it’s one of the most hard-working parts of your remodel. Since the living room is one of the busiest areas in your home, you’ll want a floor that can withstand a lot of foot traffic. Hardwoods are almost always a great choice, but don’t dismiss other options! Talk to your remodeler about what materials such as tile, carpet and polished concrete can offer.

Play Up the Room’s Lighting

Good lighting can set the mood of your living room and improve its appearance significantly. Combine layers of natural and artificial light to create an environment that looks and feels just right, whatever the time of day.
