The Pros & Cons of Different Carpeting Materials

If you’re planning on installing new flooring, carpeting is the most popular flooring option. It feels warm underfoot, comes in a wide variety of colors and designs, and can help tie a room’s interior design together. But which carpeting material is best?

In general, carpeting materials can be classified into two categories: synthetic and natural. The interior remodeling contractors at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Madison list the pros and cons of each option below to help you get started on choosing the best carpet for your home.

Synthetic Fibers

The synthetic fibers used for carpeting are nylon, triexta (or Smartstrand), polypropylene (olefin), polyester and acrylic.

  • Nylon – Carpets made of nylon fibers are durable, easy to maintain and the most popular option on the market. However, nylon carpeting isn’t stain-resistant, so if you’re planning to install it in areas with high foot traffic, stain treatment is needed.
  • Triexta – Triexta or Smartstrand carpeting is an eco-friendly alternative to nylon that’s just as durable and easy to maintain.
  • Polypropylene (olefin) – Polypropylene or olefin carpeting, which dries quickly, is often installed in basements. However, this type of carpeting is not that durable and can get soiled easily, so it’s best to avoid using it in areas that experience high foot traffic.
  • Polyester – Polyester, which is made from recycled materials, is a more eco-friendly, stain-resistant and affordable alternative to polypropylene or olefin. However, it isn’t the most durable carpeting material. After a few years, you might notice that polyester carpeting is starting to get a bit worn.
  • Acrylic – Acrylic carpeting is a smart choice for homeowners who want the look of wool carpeting but don’t want to pay a premium price. Unlike regular carpeting, carpets made from acrylic—also known as man-made wool—don’t collect static and resist mold, moisture, staining and fading.

Natural Fibers

Wool is the only natural fiber that’s strong enough to be used in carpeting. And thanks to its natural elasticity, track marks and shading aren’t that noticeable on wool carpeting. This natural elasticity and robustness is the reason why wool carpeting can maintain its appearance for a long time.

Of course, wool carpeting isn’t without its advantages. For starters, it is more expensive than carpeting made from synthetic fibers. However, if you’re looking for a durable carpet, wool carpeting is worth the investment. Having trouble choosing a new carpeting material for your home?
