The kitchen isn’t exactly easy to keep clean. Many of DreamMaker’s kitchen remodeling clients, in fact, make a point of asking us to replace their cabinets with ones that won’t require as much care and maintenance. That’s a pretty smart use of their remodeling dollar! If low-maintenance cabinets are high up on your kitchen renovation wish list, here are some of our top tips.
Go for Flush Cabinets
Most kitchen cabinets have either flush or matching ends. Matching ends have panels in the same style as the cabinet doors. While we love how much character and elegance this look can bring to a kitchen, it also usually means more wiping and dusting. Flush ends, on the other hand, are flat panels that match the color of your cabinet doors. They fit right in with contemporary kitchens, and kitchen remodelers sometimes advise using them in traditional and transitional designs because of their ease of maintenance.
Avoid Excessive Details
When it comes to kitchen cabinets, simpler means easier to clean. Slab or shaker doors, for instance, make cleaning a breeze because their smooth, solid surfaces have few corners where dust or grease can accumulate. Compare these with doors that have raised panels or beadboard inserts, which can be very difficult to maintain. If you want easy, go for smooth doors with very little trim or features like corbels, molding or even feet at the bottom.
Choose a Stain Instead of a Paint
Stains and paints can both show dust and fingerprints, and lighter colors can easily show splatters. But a stain is a lot easier to touch up than paint. A scratch on a stained cabinet can be easily hidden or fixed. Painting kitchen cabinets is a more involved process. It can be difficult to find matching paint or paint markers and, if the scratch is severe enough, sanding the whole surface down to bare wood may be necessary for an even finish.
Steer Clear of Glass Doors
Glass doors look wonderful and are a great way to make functional pieces look like display items. But they also mean more maintenance! Because glass hides nothing, fingerprints, smudges and grease spots make glass doors look dirtier than wood.
