When it comes to interior home remodeling, you want it to be worth every penny. That means making sure everything is on point, from design to execution. A lot of remodelers can come up with great proposals, but getting plans off of paper and into your home can be another story altogether. This is why it’s important to take a close look at a remodeler’s gallery, showroom and even some of their past projects, if possible.
If you get the chance to take a closer look at a remodeler’s work, here are some of the things to keep an eye out for before you make a hiring decision.
Countertops
If you see countertops with odd seams or large gaps filled with caulk, it’s a sign that the original templating of the tops wasn’t done well. The mantra “measure twice, cut once” should be honored when it comes to all aspects of home improvement and remodeling. Poorly fitting countertops may be a result of rushed measurement or a lack of communication with the remodeler’s fabricators. Not a good sign!
Paint
It’s easy enough to gauge the quality of a paint job after an interior renovation job … so easy, in fact, you can do it with your eyes closed! Just walk up to the wall in question and touch it. It should feel smooth, even and clean, so if there aren’t any rough patches, drip marks or other inconsistencies, then the job was done properly.
What you will need your eyes for is to check for clean cut-ins at the ceiling, which means there aren’t any wobbly lines between the wall color and the ceiling color. You’ll also want to see if there’s an even finish throughout the painted area. For instance, a matte wall should look matte all over—no shiny patches.
Doors & Cabinets
A reliable and easy test for newly installed doors and cabinets is to open and close them a few times. Do they move smoothly and without sticking? Do they stay open when opened? Do they stay shut when closed? Are they noisy? Keep in mind that some natural changes can affect how doors perform, regardless of a contractor’s workmanship. For instance, wood doors may swell a little if the weather has been damp.
Tile
How well tile is installed can make or break how a bathroom or kitchen looks. To check for proper tile installation, observe whether the tiles square up nicely. Look at how light bounces off of them to see whether there are any tiles jutting out or caving in. Grout lines should also be level and evenly sized all throughout and, in most cases, they should be as thin as possible.
