How We Keep Renovation Sites Clean & Organized

Major home renovations are both exciting and messy, whether we’re talking about a kitchen built from the ground up or a complete master suite addition. But just because parts of the process naturally involve a lot of dust and debris doesn’t mean you should resign yourself to utter chaos. Any good remodeler will do what’s necessary to keep the work site and surrounding areas as neat as possible.

Below are some of the ways we keep a site clean and organized when we’re working on an interior home remodeling project.

1. We create work paths.

The first step to any major work is to lay down protective coverings at thresholds and everywhere our crew will pass through, both inside and outside your home. Hard floors can be protected with rosin paper or hardboard, while heavy canvas dropcloths protect carpets from dirt and snags. Door jambs, wall corners and other parts of your home that may suffer from bumps are also protected.

2. We move everything that can be moved.

Before any demo work begins, our crew will make sure that all furniture, décor and household items that can be moved are put in storage or in a different room. Extensive remodels benefit from having the work site as bare as possible. This helps protect valuables from accidental damage.

3. We cover up anything that has to stay put.

Sometimes, taking out a fixture or heavy piece of furniture isn’t possible or practical. The SOP for interior remodeling contractors in cases like these is to cover it with tarp or plastic. This still helps protect your belongings from dust, scratches and paint splatters.

4. We put up dust barriers.

Dust is difficult to control when air is allowed to flow freely, so we use plastic to seal off air ducts and most doorways. But because perfect seals are difficult to achieve and access is often still an issue, a big part of dust control is vacuuming the site whenever possible to minimize dust in the air. You and your neighbors will thank us for it!
