Major Remodeling Mistakes Homeowners Should Avoid

When done right, an interior renovation can increase the value and functionality of your home. But cutting corners and making mistakes can result in wasted time, money and energy. Hiring a professional can help ensure your project is accomplished correctly the first time.

Here are remodeling mistakes you should avoid.

Hiring the First Contractor You Talk To

It’s never a good idea to hire an interior remodeling contractor before doing your research. Consult at least three companies and ask for an estimate to get an idea of how much your project could cost. Look up contractors online, check their portfolios, read reviews and ask for references.

Only hire a contractor with a valid license and insurance. Don’t hire one just because they are offering the lowest estimate. It also helps to know what the company’s subcontractors or suppliers say about them.

Not Knowing What You Want

You’re going to end up with what your contractor thinks you want if you don’t have expectations for your project. This could also result in higher project costs. For inspiration, check home improvement websites like Houzz or Pinterest. You can also browse magazines and create a vision board to share with your remodeler.

Not Asking for a Written Contract

All details of your project must be included in the contract, from the start date to the estimated completion date to the materials to be used. It’s also important to specify a time limit for resolving issues promptly.

Not Agreeing on a Payment Schedule

Your payment terms are just as important as the cost of your remodel. The payment schedule should be stated in the contract, starting with the amount paid upfront, which shouldn’t be more than 30 percent. Once the project has started, periodic payments should coincide with completed milestones in the remodel. To ensure your project is accomplished to your satisfaction, withhold at least 10 percent of the total cost to be paid after the remodel is completed.

Only Focusing on Appearance

Aside from the aesthetic part of your project, you also need to focus on structural and safety concerns. Do you need to have the electrical system or plumbing updated? Make sure that the foundation and subflooring are stable, so you don’t have to deal with major issues later. One way to ensure your home remodel is up to code is by hiring an experienced local contractor.
