Common Small Bathroom Design Mistakes To Avoid

Designing a small bathroom is a challenge for even the most seasoned designers. In fact, it’s not unusual to make crucial mistakes during the design stages that could be incorporated into the bathroom quote. In today’s post, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Larimer County takes a look at these common — but avoidable — design mistakes for small bathrooms.

Installing a Shower Enclosure

A typical bathroom remodel would involve some type of shower enclosure. While it’s perfectly fine for a standard-sized bathroom, adding it to a small bathroom can make the space look even smaller. Like an open floor plan, removing all partitions and enclosures in a bathroom can help eliminate visual clutter and use other design strategies to create separation, like a change in tile or elevation.

Installing a Bathtub

Bathtubs have a fairly large footprint that, like a shower enclosure, can take up a significant portion of the floor space in a small bathroom. You can instead eliminate the bathtub and make it a three-quarters bathroom: sink, toilet and shower. If the bathroom is located at the ground level, you can make it a half bath (sink and toilet), also known as a powder room. In addition to freeing up precious real estate, eliminating the bathtub can also help keep the bathroom cost manageable.

Choosing Standard Fixtures

Wall-mounted fixtures can help you reclaim much of the floor space, but they will require significant changes to the plumbing, as it will have to be routed through the walls. Remodelers on a budget typically choose to keep the plumbing where it is to keep the labor costs low. In a small bathroom, choosing standard fixtures and keeping the same plumbing would defeat the purpose of remodeling for space.

Installing Intricate Tiles

Patterns made of small tiles look great, but they can end up looking too busy, which can make the bathroom look crowded or cluttered. Large-format tiles are the opposite: they create the impression of open space while highlighting other elements like fixtures an decor.
