6 Secrets to Making Ceilings Look Higher

Higher ceilings are popular for making rooms appear more spacious, brighter and visually appealing. Even if you don’t have this architectural feature in your home, you can still achieve its look. Fortunately, it doesn’t involve making significant changes to your living space.

Use these six tips from a trusted home renovator to make ceilings look taller.

What Can You Do to Make Ceilings Look Higher?

1. Select a Light Ceiling Color

The simplest way to create the illusion of height is to paint ceilings a lighter color. White is an excellent option because it reflects more light. To make the ceiling look even higher, drag its color a few inches down the wall.

2. Choose Low Furniture

Low-profile and simple furniture can help extend the height of a room. The less eye-catching your furnishings are, the more your eyes are drawn to the walls. Select pieces with minimal horizontal elements to accentuate the space between the furniture and the ceiling.

3 . Use Vertical Patterns

Are you thinking about changing your wallpaper? Consider vertical patterns or stripes because they make your ceiling appear higher. You can also easily incorporate vertical elements into your space through curtains, wall decor and cushions.

4. Hang Curtains High

Your window treatments can change the perceived height of your ceiling. One trick is to hang floor-to-ceiling curtains higher on the wall. They will draw the eye upward and give the room a touch of elegance.

5. Use Recessed Lighting

Avoid large pendant lights if you want to make your ceilings look higher. Recessed lights are a more practical option instead of hanging fixtures. They can make your space feel taller and roomier. Wall fixtures that cast light downwards are also ideal for low-ceiling rooms. An experienced general contractor can help you combine different lighting fixtures for your home to achieve sufficient and balanced illumination.

6. Use Narrow and Tall Mirrors

Place a tall and narrow mirror against the wall to elongate the height of a room. It will instantly raise your ceiling and make your living space look more expansive. You can get the same effect from a sleek floor-to-ceiling bookshelf.
