Should You Remodel Your Attic?

Have you considered remodeling your attic? An attic can be a very versatile space. In this blog, we discuss the benefits of this type of home remodel and give you some ideas for how to use it.

Benefits of Remodeling Your Attic

One of the biggest advantages is that remodeling your attic will not raise your property taxes; you’re simply making better, more efficient use of your existing space. If you want more square footage in your current home but don’t want to move, remodeling your attic could be a good investment. Attic conversions are commonly used to create home offices, entertainment areas, studios, playrooms and an extra bedroom or two.

Uses for a Remodeled Attic

  1. Office. An attic office gives you a private space but is still connected to the main home. You can enjoy a quiet escape where you can focus and be productive with the right sound-dampening materials. You’ll need space for a desk, computer equipment, shelving and office supplies if you work from home full-time.
  2. Home gym. If going to the gym seems like too much effort, you can have everything you need at home. Gyms are fully customizable, ranging from a small space for bodyweight exercises to the most cutting-edge Peloton systems. Remember, attics can be a bit hot, especially during the summer, so make sure to ask your home renovation expert how you can connect your renovated attic to your HVAC system.
  3. Game room. Making your attic livable could mean turning it into a place for entertainment. Perhaps your family would enjoy a pool table, foosball or ping pong. All of these would be ideal in a finished attic where you can retreat to relive your childhood.

Things to Consider Before Remodeling Your Attic

  1. Check your building and safety codes. Not all attics meet building code requirements. Make sure that your attic meets the safety requirements, which include at least two exits.
  2. If your attic doesn’t have a staircase, you’ll need to figure out whether you have the space and budget to build one. You’ll also need to add a secondary exit, such as a window or a staircase.
  3. You’ll need to figure out whether your current attic can support the remodel you’re planning. If not, you might want to reconsider remodeling. Second, you might want to add more insulation to your attic to keep noise out of the rooms below.
  4. With interior remodeling, it’s important to factor in the cost of adding plumbing, electrical and air conditioning/heating if your attic meets the appropriate code requirements. You may need to extend all three systems to your attic, depending on how you plan to use your new space.
