How to Use Color Blocking in Kitchen Design

Borrowing from the fashion world, interior designers have started to use color-blocking techniques in home decor, and kitchen remodel projects in particular. This is done to break up a space and add visual interest and personality. In this post, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Larimer County shares how you can use color blocking in interior design.

Bright Base & White Uppers

This is the most classic approach to color blocking. Having white upper cabinets and walls creates a balanced appearance with the bright color of base cabinets underneath. If you want to try this approach, you can’t go wrong with blue. Even if it’s a bright color, blue is not as jarring since it evokes a feeling of calmness, akin to that of the ocean or bright blue sky. Coupled with white counters and a backsplash, this provides a great balance that makes the space fun without being overbearing.

White Base & Dark Uppers

Regardless if you like a modern, traditional or rustic aesthetic, dark upper cabinets and a white base is a combination that will stand the test of time. This duo can be the perfect backdrop for an exciting statement backsplash. It can pair well with gold, silver, bronze and black accents, so it’s difficult to find hardware that won’t complement this combination.

Mix Up Material Choices

This is a great decision, especially if you have a larger kitchen. Your kitchen renovation contractor will tell you that it’s nice to have varying cabinet materials to provide contrast around your kitchen space. You can opt to use white oak veneers for your upper cabinets, and flat-front white cabinetry for your island and the lower cabinets. Add some additional hints of wood to give some warmth and a subtle rustic touch for a modern kitchen.
