Accessibility Features to Consider

An Accessible Toilet

Convenient toilet placement is crucial in any accessible bathroom. The placement of essentials such as soap, towels and other toiletries must also be considered, because they need to be within easy reach of an individual who is seated in a wheelchair due to reduced mobility. Another key feature to add is a raised toilet seat, which makes the toilet more accessible to those using crutches or a wheelchair. A raised seat makes sitting and standing up easier because the height is equal to that of a wheelchair.

Grab Bars

Any type of accessible bathroom remodel will include this feature. Grab bars are typically placed in the shower and near the toilet to provide support and balance. Double grab bars are often placed on each side of the toilet, but it’s also acceptable to install only a single grab bar on one side. When discussing how the grab bars will be installed with your contractor, be sure they are within easy reach of the user and at least 18 inches to the nearest wall or fixture. 

Adequate Space

Another essential feature of a well-designed accessible bathroom is enough space around the toilet and shower area for those with mobility issues to navigate. Adequate spacing must be present on both sides of the toilet to provide convenience for those in a wheelchair or on crutches. The space should be enough for easy transfer to and from the toilet seat. 

There should also be ample clearance underneath the vanity/sink. Having no cabinets underneath makes those in a wheelchair able to roll up to the vanity with ease. Single-lever faucets are also a must as they can be turned on and off more easily. You can also consider hands-free faucets that have a sensor to make the sink more accessible.
