Wet Rooms, Part 1: What You Need to Know

A wet room is a type of bathroom space that’s completely waterproofed. It has a shower area that’s flush with the rest of the bathroom floor. Depending on your preferences, a wet room can provide more safety and convenience in addition to an improved bathroom experience. If you or a family member has limited mobility, a wet room is a safer and more convenient way to enjoy a shower since it eliminates the need to step over a bath or into a shower enclosure.

Continue reading to know whether a wet room suits your needs. A home remodel expert shares an overview of wet rooms, including their pros and cons.

How Do Wet Rooms Work?

A wet room is a type of bathroom with floors and walls sealed with a waterproofing membrane. The shower is also level with the rest of the floor, so all the water flows into the shower drain. A slight slope in the floor helps direct water towards the drain.

A full bathroom typically includes a shower area, which is already considered a wet room, and may also have glass panels to separate the area from the rest of the room. This partition prevents water from splashing around when the shower is in use. However, unlike traditional bathrooms, wet rooms do not have a door in the shower area.

Is a Wet Room Right for Me?

Listed below are factors you should consider before starting your bathroom renovation. These will help you decide whether a wet room is a suitable choice or not.

Pros:

  • The minimal lines created by a wet room make maintenance and cleaning easy. Cleaning and maintenance are often trickier in traditional bathrooms since they have more nooks and crannies.
  • Adding a new bathroom or wet room will add value to your home. It will be advantageous to you when it’s time to sell your property.

Cons:

  • Wet rooms are not always practical for everyone, with slippery floors and moisture reaching various areas of the bathroom. Although the level floor is ideal for people with limited mobility, the slippery tiles can pose a hazard. That said, it’s vital to waterproof the area and use a slip-resistant flooring material.
  • Water drainage issues can be one of the most serious drawbacks of wet rooms. If the drainage system is not properly designed, water buildup can lead to flooding. To avoid such problems, regularly clean the drains.
