A tiny kitchen can be a problem. Even if your kitchen triangle (the space between the cooktop, refrigerator and sink) is perfect, the rest of the kitchen might be limited. Where to store your china, glassware, cooking utensils, spices, etc.? If another person is in the refrigerator, do you have to wait for them to close it before you can move to another area of the kitchen? Professional kitchen remodelers often have to deal with such challenges.
Expanding a kitchen is not as complicated if you have enough property for building out, but it’s a lot more challenging if building out is out of the question. If that’s the issue with your kitchen expansion project, these ideas might be the answer.
De-Clutter & Get Space-Saving Items
A kitchen expansion project can cost quite a lot of money, so before you decide on it, try something a lot less expensive: remove the clutter in your kitchen. There might be furniture and appliances in your kitchen that you never use. Donate, sell, give away or dispose of those things. Another way to increase your space is to replace fixtures with space-saving alternatives.
Bump Out by Two Feet
If decluttering and using space-savers is not enough, consider bumping out your kitchen by a maximum of two feet. You don’t have to add a foundation if you’re building out only two feet. This might not sound like a lot of space but when you do this with your kitchen renovation, you’ll realize how big a difference it makes.
Remove a Wall
Removing a wall is more about creating the illusion of a wider space than actually gaining more space. Its effects, however, can be significant. No more cramped feeling when you’re working in your kitchen. Talk to a professional contractor about tearing out a portion of a wall or the entire wall. They can advise you regarding doing this safely, without risking a collapse.
Open a Wall
Instead of removing a wall, you can also create an opening in it. This is your best option if your contractor says the wall you would like to get rid of is load-bearing.
Improve Your Windows
Sometimes, it’s only a matter of illumination. A brightly lit kitchen looks bigger than a dark one. Replace the windows with units that have more glass. A great option is to add bay or bow windows, which automatically provide several inches of additional floor space. You can position a round table by a bay or bow window and remove a kitchen island that might be in the way.
