Is a Soapstone Countertop Right for Your Kitchen?

Soapstone is one of today’s most popular countertop materials. It’s durable, beautiful and virtually maintenance-free, so it’s worthy of consideration for your next kitchen renovation project. In this blog, the kitchen remodelers at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Hollywood share an overview of this versatile countertop material.

What Is Soapstone?

Soapstone is a metamorphic rock that has been quarried by humans for more than 8,000 years. It is composed primarily of talc, which makes it softer than most types of quarried rock. Soapstone is typically gray, green or brown with variegated streaks, and feels like a bar of soap when held, hence the name.

More than just material for countertops, soapstone is used for cooking slabs, bowls and plates, and ornamental sculptures. It’s also used as insulative material for wood stoves, fireplace hearths and molds for metal casting. Its softness makes it a favorite among sculptors, both professionals and hobbyists.

Pros of Soapstone

There are several reasons why soapstone is a popular material for kitchen renovation projects:

  • It’s natural. Even with advanced manufacturing technologies that allow engineered materials to mimic variegations, the real thing remains hard to replicate. It also comes in different shades, as described above. No two soapstone slabs are alike, which makes every soapstone countertop a truly unique piece.
  • It’s heat-resistant. If you do a lot of cooking, a heat-resistant countertop can make a big difference. Cast iron pans and similar cookware tend to hold heat for a long time, and if placed on a surface with less heat resistance, the heat could cause permanent damage. This is not a problem with soapstone.
  • It doesn’t react to acids. Soapstone is widely used in chemistry labs because it doesn’t react to any type of acid. While you’re not expected to handle strong acids and chemicals in your kitchen, you’ll likely be handling acidic ingredients such as vinegar, lemons and tomatoes.

Cons of Soapstone

Before you call a remodeler about getting a soapstone countertop, there are some cons that should be weighed into your decision.

  • It’s soft. It is possible to dent a soapstone counter with impact from a dropped can or frying pan. You will need to use a cutting board for even casual use, such as when cutting the crusts off sandwiches or slicing apples.
  • It fades from frequent use. If you use a certain spot on your countertop more than others, those areas will noticeably fade. Unless you’re willing to put forth the time and effort required for oiling a soapstone countertop, then it may not be the best option.
  • The texture may be off-putting. We have described its texture as very similar to an unused soap bar, which, for some people, is off-putting.
