The Do’s & Don’ts of Planning Your Kitchen Layout

Fixtures and features don’t matter much if you don’t get the layout of your kitchen right. To achieve a space that is as functional as it is aesthetically pleasing, you’ll want to prioritize the layout in your kitchen remodel. Here’s a look at some of the do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when planning your kitchen layout.

Kitchen Layout Do’s

Considering the circulation space.

The last thing you want is for appliances like the refrigerator or oven to become obstructions, especially when you open them, due to a lack of space. To achieve adequate circulation within your kitchen, allow at least four feet of space between countertops to facilitate movement. This way, you don’t restrict the number of people who can use the kitchen at the same time.

Taking advantage of vertical space.

The empty wall space in your kitchen can provide valuable space for vertical storage. Install overhead cabinetry or open shelving to store pantry items, additional chinaware or baking accessories. It should reach the ceiling so there is no dead space at the top. Consider mixing and matching these two options to create visual interest in your kitchen.

Creating a short distance between important fixtures.

Part of planning a kitchen renovation project is making sure that the tasks you’ll be doing – preparing, serving and cleaning up – are as easy as possible. You don’t want to reach for an ingredient in the refrigerator and walk several steps to the other side of the room to place it on a counter. Incorporate the kitchen triangle into your layout for maximum convenience.

Kitchen Layout Don’ts

Disregarding the placement of the kitchen island.

Much of the food preparation happens on the kitchen island. If your proposed layout calls for island installation, you’ll want it placed in an area where it will not block the space where the refrigerator or dishwasher opens. Make sure that it is within arm’s reach of your kitchen’s important fixtures.

Skimping on lighting.

Lighting is important when planning your kitchen layout. If the space lacks the necessary lighting, you’ll feel less comfortable preparing and cooking meals. To achieve ample lighting, consider installing pendant lights above your work surfaces, including the kitchen island. Under-cabinet LED strips add extra visibility as you chop vegetables or measure ingredients.

Getting wrong-sized appliances.

If you want to incorporate a new appliance in your kitchen space, make sure to measure it before ordering it. Don’t forget to consider the way the appliance opens as well. Doing this in advance helps to avoid getting an oversized or undersized item that won’t fit in your layout.
