A Guide to Choosing the Ideal Sink for Your Bathroom

If you are renovating your bathroom, one of the most important fixtures you will select is the sink. There are so many options to choose from and considerations to make, from the type of materials to the size of your sink. It may feel overwhelming but fortunately, a professional bathroom remodeler can help you on your journey to finding the ideal bathroom sink!

Consider the Size

Before choosing a sink, be sure to map out where the sink will be and how much room you have to work with. No matter how appealing your sink may be, it will be useless if it doesn’t fit where you need it. Keep in mind that with or without a vanity, the sink must be near the water supply connections.

Sink Types

If you’re only upgrading your bathroom sink, you should start by measuring the space and deciding how your sink is going to be mounted. If you are completely remodeling your space, your options may only be limited by your budget and the bathroom size. Here are a few mounting types to choose from:

  • Drop-In Sink – It rests over the edge of a pre-cut hole in a cabinet or vanity. The edge of the sink fits over the countertop to keep the water inside and support the sink.
  • Wall-Mounted Sink – It doesn’t have cabinetry support. Instead, a wall-mounted sink bolts into the wall and connects directly to the water supply. This type of sink is usually found in small bathrooms.
  • Pedestal Sink – It brings a classic look to any bathroom. Due to design continuity, the pedestal is generally made of the same material as the sink itself. Since it doesn’t cover a large floor area and has no storage space, it is a great choice for powder rooms.
  • Undermount Sink – It is installed below a cutout in the cabinet or vanity top. Since there is no lip, this type of sink is easy to wipe clean. There are often no faucet holes on these sinks if the faucets are mounted to the vanity top or wall.
  • Vessel Sink – It has a traditional look of a basin but with more contemporary materials and plumbing advancements. Instead of sitting inside it, this type of sink sits on top of the countertop or vanity.

Sink Materials & Styles

When choosing the material for your sink, be sure that it complements the design and decor of your bathroom. Whether you want your bathroom to look antique or contemporary, there are options for every style. For instance, engineered stone and granite sinks are a popular choice among homeowners for their durability. Glass sinks look elegant, making them a top option for master or guest baths.
