Most homeowners prefer being hands-on when it comes to kitchen remodeling, particularly during the design phase. However, they usually leave the actual measurements to their remodeling contractor — which is understandable as this part of the job can get technical. However, it’s also important to familiarize yourself with some of the key measurements involved in building a better kitchen.
The ideal kitchen design maximizes the use of the “work triangle.” This is the layout that connects three of the most-used parts of this busy room: the sink, the range and the refrigerator. Good measurements often start with this work triangle and go from there.
The Magic Numbers
Experts use work triangles to make kitchen remodeling projects even more efficient. Work triangles need to be, at the most, 21 feet in total perimeter. This means if you add the distance between all adjacent points (sink, stove and fridge), the total should never exceed 21 feet. Anything above this measurement means the kitchen is too big to navigate efficiently. Of course, this distance is simply a recommendation based on averages, and some people have unique needs.
Storage Spaces
After a grocery trip, you’ll likely set down your items in the kitchen first. That’s why our experts recommend placing your dry goods storage and refrigerator within arm’s reach of the kitchen entrance. Pantries need to have about 15 to 25 inches of adjacent counter space for convenience, giving you enough space to prepare food for cooking without having to walk across the kitchen.
Stove Central
Make sure your pots, pans and utensils are within reach of the cooking center in your interior remodeling plan. The stove center is where your range, oven and other cooking equipment are located. Give yourself up to 36 inches of counter space on either side of your cooktop. Ovens also need to have counter space directly next to them. This lets you put down hot food quickly after taking it out.
Refrigerator Measurements
Homeowners choose refrigerator sizes based on the needs of their households. However, it’s often a good idea to choose a refrigerator first and design your kitchen remodel around it, rather than to build the kitchen first and then look for a fridge that fits the available opening.
