Your Room-by-Room Aging-in-Place Checklist



Aging-in-place is defined as the ability live in your own home and community independently, comfortably and safely, regardless of ability, age or income level. It’s a concept easy enough to understand but one that is not always easy to execute. If you or your loved one is considering aging-in-place, it’s important to make sure your home will be properly equipped to address your needs, especially if you have plans for family room additions or other remodeling work.

To help you get started, here’s a simple room-by-room checklist from DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Elizabethtown:

Entrances & Exits

  • Create a zero-step entry into the home

  • Add handrails to both sides of all steps

  • Widen doorways to at least 36 inches

Steps & Stairways

  • Repair or renovate stairways to fix weak sections, missing treads, loose steps, etc.

  • Cover steps with low-pile, woven carpet with thin padding

  • Apply nonslip adhesive strips to uncarpeted steps

  • Install stair lifts

Kitchen 

  • Install task lighting over the stove, sink and other work areas

  • Install adjustable pull-down shelving or similar storage solutions for safe access to upper cabinets

  • Create a work area with seating

Bathroom

  • Install grab bars beside the toilet and in bathtub/shower areas

  • Install adjustable or hand-held showerheads

  • Install/add a shower seat

  • Install toilets at a comfortable height

  • Install easy to use fixtures

  • Insulate exposed pipes

Living Room & Bedroom

  • Place bed near bathroom for easy access

  • Arrange furniture to keep passageways clear and wide

  • Remove throw and scatter rugs

  • Secure larger area rugs to the floor with non-slip mats or double-sided tape
