Sustainable Bathrooms: Design Principles to Remember

If you’re trying to “go green,” it makes sense to start with the bathroom, one of the most used rooms in your home. However, installing just a few energy efficiency features isn’t enough to make your bathroom more sustainable. Extensive bathroom remodeling is needed. To help you get started on planning your bathroom renovation, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of East Georgia, a leading local kitchen remodeler, explains some principles you should remember when designing your new, sustainable bathroom.

Efficient Use of Water

A sustainable bathroom should make more efficient use of water, especially since the bathroom accounts for a large portion of the average household’s water consumption. Here are some features that can help reduce water waste:
  • Automatic faucets. People tend to waste a lot of water while washing their hands. By installing an automatic faucet in your home, you can keep wasted water to a minimum.
  • High-efficiency toilets. Some homeowners mistakenly think low-flush toilets are of low quality, but the opposite is true. High-efficiency, low-flush toilets are just as effective as conventional toilets. The only difference is they use less water.
  • Steam showers. No one can resist a nice, relaxing soak in a tub, but if you want a more eco-friendly alternative, install a steam shower. They consume just two gallons of water for a 20-minute steam.
  • Low-flow showerheads. If you’re satisfied with your shower, install a low-flow showerhead. By taking advantage of water pressure, a low-flow showerhead can efficiently get you clean while using less water. In a single year, the average American household can save up to 3,000 gallons of water.

Natural Ventilation

Bathrooms require plenty of ventilation to prevent moisture from accumulating and creating a damp environment that’s a breeding ground for mold and mildew. You can install energy-efficient exhaust fans, but many home remodeling contractors recommend making use of natural ventilation as much as possible. One way of doing so is to install frosted windows to strike a balance between the need for ventilation and privacy.

Use of Sustainable Materials

Of course, a sustainable bathroom can still have a relaxing, spa-like atmosphere. Add a modern, luxurious feel to your bathroom in a sustainable way by using recycled metal or glass or eco-friendly materials like porcelain.
