An Overview of Neoclassical Interior Design

A tour of affluent eighteenth and nineteenth century homes in Europe and the U.S. will give you an idea of what neoclassical interior design is all about. Back then, it was a design trend that competed with Romanticism. Today’s version of neoclassical home remodeling is replete with modern touches.

Early Applications

Neoclassical design can be traced back to Roman and Greek inspirations. Robert Adam, the English architect, took many elements of Western architecture and combined them with Roman and Greek architecture to come up with the inspiration for neoclassical design. Timeless elegance is what sets this design apart from others. It’s as well-loved today as it was when it was first introduced in the homes of the wealthy.

Characteristics

Exterior building designs following neoclassical architecture are simple, with geometric forms, dramatic columns, Greek detailing and walls bereft of design. Interior design is similarly muted and modest. Some of the key elements of neoclassical interior design are:

  • Mild colors, including white, gray, blue, yellow, cream and green.
  • Furniture is simple and symmetrical, with plenty of exposed wood or metal outlining the shape. Ornamental ends are common. Luxurious upholstery is more about comfort than style.
  • Decorative motifs often include floral patterns, especially on rugs and walls.

Modern Applications

For starters, you can avoid gaudy decorations and patterns, overly bright colors and furniture, and a cluttered-looking room. Focus on simplicity and timelessness. Nowadays, it’s common to combine neoclassical style with modern features and appliances, but choose items with a subdued, elegant design. The rule of thumb is to put a higher premium on quality and convenience.
