Important Bathroom Layout Dos and Don’ts to Remember

The bathroom is more than just a place for your hygiene needs. It is a hub for relaxation and a spa-like oasis where you start and end your day. If you are planning to give this space a makeover, you’ll want it to be as aesthetically pleasing and functional as possible. It all starts with the perfect layout.

Home remodel contractor DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Central Texas shares these dos and don’ts to keep in mind when planning the layout of your bathroom.

Do Focus on Storage

Storage is one aspect of a bathroom makeover that is often overlooked but is valued. It should strike the right balance between having as much available storage as possible and avoiding the space from feeling too cramped. A variety of storage solutions are worth considering, including a niche within a shower enclosure or open shelving above the toilet tank.

Don’t Forget About Lighting

Lighting is a crucial aspect of any home renovation project that you shouldn’t overlook, especially when planning to update your bathroom. Layering your bathroom’s lighting can bring the space to life. Consider adding task lighting on top of your vanity or accent lighting in the form of concealed LED strips beneath your cabinets, in addition to ambient lighting for room illumination. Focus on your windows as well so you can harness natural lighting inside your bathroom during the day.

Do Keep Measurement Minimums in Mind.

Make a list of standard bathroom dimension minimums. For instance, the distance between the shower or tub and other fixtures, such as the sink or toilet, should be at least 12 inches. The toilet should be at least four feet away from the next wall. If there are two vanity sinks in the room, there should be at least six feet between them so that persons using the area at the same time don’t bump elbows.

Don’t Forget to Add Zoning

Planning zones for bathing and grooming will result in a more coherent bathroom design. Consider each area to be its own mini-room. The placement of a wall between the zones may aid their differentiation and increase their seclusion. Highlight each zone with some storage features, such as floating shelves for personal care products on the vanity side and towel hooks on the bathing side.

Do Consider Your Existing Infrastructure

Bathroom remodeling gives you many options, but it’s best to plan the layout around the plumbing you already have. That’s because relocating the pipes is expensive and takes more time to complete. Depending on where the bathroom is, you may have to tear up the floors and ceilings to put in new pipes and drains. It’s much easier to replace fixtures that can be hooked up to the same water lines as the old ones.

Don’t Expose the Toilet

Nothing is more unattractive than walking into the bathroom and seeing the toilet. It is best to conceal it upon entry, preferably on the side of the vanity or in the space behind the bathroom door.
