Contractors & Homeowners Weigh In on Remodeling Etiquette

A surprisingly large number of homeowners are confused about home improvement etiquette. That’s why The Bath Outlet conducted a survey to shed some light on contractor and homeowner expectations during a remodeling project. In this article, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Central Texas, a home remodeling expert, discusses the survey results and focuses on issues related to security and home access. We’ll also give some tips to help you work with a contractor.

Security Issues & Bathroom Access

The survey found that more than half of the homeowners said that they would not give their contractor keys and/or security passcodes to their home. However, this tendency depends somewhat on the length of the home improvement project and the personal relationship the homeowner has with the contractor. In addition, according to the survey, contractors prefer to let the homeowners decide whether or not they will receive a key or passcode. The contractors said that their goal is to make sure that their customers feel comfortable.

As for bathroom access, over 75% of the homeowners surveyed said that they would allow workers to use a guest bathroom. However, one participant said that if it was a major project with lots of workers then the contractor would have to make other arrangements. Meanwhile, 61% of the surveyed contractors said that they ask for permission to use a client’s bathroom first.

Working With a Remodeling Company

To reduce delays and to speed up your project, you will need to stick to your material choices and other decisions once work begins. Changing your mind in the middle of a project only causes delays and costs you money. In addition, you should also trust your contractor once they begin work. Don’t micromanage them or second-guess every single decision they make because this causes delays. Save these discussions for your scheduled meetings.
