The kitchen is the heart of the home, which is why your kitchen renovation project should achieve a balance of function and exceptional aesthetics. The right kitchen layout is key to this. Read on to learn the basic do’s and don’ts of creating a kitchen layout!
Do’s
- Use wide walkways. Your kitchen floor plan must have enough space for easy movement in the room. The walkways in the kitchen should be at least 36 inches wide, and the aisle in the cooking zone should be at least 42 inches wide. If two people simultaneously cook in the kitchen, the aisle should be at least 48 inches wide.
- Keep cooktops at a safe distance. An excellent kitchen layout ensures that the cooktop isn’t obstructing traffic flow, especially if passersby need to pass through the kitchen to another room. A kitchen island can effectively separate the working area of your kitchen from the social part, so you might want to include this during your kitchen remodel. Also, make sure the refrigerator can be easily accessed by both passersby and those working in the kitchen.
- Plan the clearance for appliances and cabinet doors. Cabinets and appliances need enough space to open outward so you can put in food or other items. When planning a kitchen layout, take note of the doors’ swing direction and keep them away from corners. Ensure the appliances and cabinets are arranged properly to prevent collisions when they are opened simultaneously.
Don’ts
- Make waste disposal difficult. The kitchen can produce more waste than other rooms in your home. During your home remodel, don’t forget to improve waste disposal so that it becomes easier for anyone working in the kitchen. For example, in a cabinet, you can place separate containers for glass, plastic and metal. Then, use a spare drawer to hold paper waste, like newspapers and grocery receipts.
- Forget to take kitchen workflow into account. Consider how you work in the kitchen and make sure your layout will allow you to have an efficient workflow. You can increase functionality by creating storage for spices and oils near the cooking zone. You should also store cutlery and dishes near the dishwasher.
A professional kitchen designer will meticulously consider your kitchen objectives. They will also optimize your kitchen layout to eliminate unnecessary steps and ensure efficient cooking, washing and food preparation.
- Force a kitchen island. A kitchen island is a highly appealing feature. It elevates your kitchen design and increases your storage and counter space. However, it will only work if you have the space for it. If it will block foot traffic in your kitchen, you might be better off without it.
