Color blocking is a design trend that involves using contrasting blocks or panels of solid and typically bright colors to enhance a neutral color palette. In today’s post, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Burlington County takes a look at color blocking and how it can be used to enhance your kitchen design.
Getting Started on Color Blocking
The goal of color blocking is to add large blocks of color to liven up a neutral or monochromatic color scheme. You’ve probably heard of the phrase “adding pops of color”, which refers to choosing colorful pieces like fixtures or framed decor to create a focal point. This is a good way to understand how color blocking works, especially if you haven’t decided which colors will work for you. From smaller changes, you can then work in larger or more permanent pieces like furniture, cabinet doors and wall panels into the design.
Color Blocking Tips
Here are some of the ways you can use color blocking when planning your kitchen remodel.
- Choose a dark base color. If you have the option to begin with a blank canvas – as opposed to adding colors to an existing color palette – a dark base color is a great way to get a modern look. It creates a “frame” around other colors and, much like the black borders on a television screen, draws the viewer’s eye. Contrasting matte and glossy surfaces can add variety to similar colors.
- Paint an accent wall with a bright color. Here’s something that’s simple and works great for all-white or neutral color palettes. Painting an accent wall a bright color can add depth and create an immediate change in your kitchen. Applying the same color to some accessories or trim can help tie the color scheme together.
- Use geometric shapes. Perhaps you’d prefer to use more than one color for blocking. Instead of a symmetrical checkerboard approach, consider using various geometric shapes and filling them with colors. Be sure to plan ahead; a color “map” will help you coordinate your color choices and avoid mistakes.
- Dress the cabinet doors in different colors. Painting or refacing cabinet doors with solid colors is a great project if you want something that can be done with a few tools and little mess. Cabinet doors and drawers can be taken out and painted away from the kitchen, which is ideal if you want to keep the walls as they are.
- Pair different types of wood. Wood comes in various grains, colors and textures. If color isn’t your thing but you would like to create a color blocking effect in your kitchen, then different-colored woods is a great way to go about it. You can extend your color selection by mixing and matching woods with stains.
