Accessible bathrooms are designed for people living with a disability or individuals who have reduced mobility, balance or grip issues. and other impairments. With their varying degrees of mobility and unique needs, it can be difficult for them to navigate regular bathrooms.
Fortunately, there are several features that can be added in order to make bathrooms more accessible. Generally, eliminating steps or barriers to toilets is a good start. But to make the space more comfortable and convenient for a wide range of people, certain features should be included in a design. Below are some of the key features that mobility remodeling specialists recommend.
Features of an Accessible Bathroom
Wide Doorways
Ensure the doorway is wide enough for wheelchair users to easily roll in and out of the bathroom. The entrance should have zero obstructions. The door should be lightweight so that people can open and close it with minimal effort. It should also swing outward so that it can be fully opened in case of emergency.
A Raised Toilet Seat
Raise the toilet seat so that those with reduced mobility can stand up and sit down more easily. This will also make it safer to transfer to and from a wheelchair. ADA guidelines recommend a height of 17-19 inches for accessible toilets. During your bathroom remodel, you may want to consider switching to a wall-mounted toilet since it can be mounted at a custom height, ensuring the right height for the user.
Grab Bars
Another feature that makes bathrooms more accessible are grab bars. Make sure to install them beside the toilet and in the shower or tub so that mobility-challenged users can hold on to them for stability and support.
Lower Placement of Sinks & Mirrors
Mirrors and sinks should be placed at lower heights so that anyone seated in a wheelchair can comfortably use them. Experts recommend a maximum rim height of 34 inches for sinks that are approached from the front. There should also be 27 inches of clearance under the sink for legroom.
