How to Open Up a Traditional Floor Plan

There’s a certain charm to old homes that draws people in, from the distinct style to the intricate detailing and cozy spaces. However, a lot of old homes are divided into small spaces that are not easy to adapt to a modern way of living. Home remodeler DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Beaverton shares tips on how you can open up a traditional floor plan.

Ways to Open Up

Knock Down Walls

When it comes to opening up a room, the first step is to knock down walls. However, it’s not always obvious whether a wall serves a structural function. Even timber partitions may provide stability, so make sure you consult a structural engineer early on. You may be able to use steel or exposed timber beams to support the new opening.

Direct Foot Traffic

While you can isolate individual spaces with furniture placement, make sure to position furniture to direct foot traffic around spaces and not through them. For example, pull sofas and chairs a few feet away from the wall to create a walkway behind them. This allows people to navigate the room without having to walk in front of others who are chatting.

Incorporate Similar Elements

When creating an open-concept floor plan, a home renovator might recommend mirroring elements from space to space. If the dining table has a sleek stainless steel frame, for example, fuse the look by incorporating stainless steel hardware on the kitchen cabinets and a stainless steel floor lamp in the living room.

Draw Attention to the Fireplace

In the family room, a large focal point, such as a gallery wall filled with framed artwork or family photographs or a fireplace made of natural stone, can set the stage for the rest of the design elements. Add complementary pieces of furniture accordingly to emphasize the focal point.

Add Lighting

If you have a small living space that is dreary or does not receive a lot of natural light, adding ambient and accent lighting is even more important. Pendant lamps over countertops in the kitchen and dimmable light switches in family rooms allow you to crank up the brightness when desired.
