Adding a Washer & Dryer to a Small Bathroom

Some homes don’t have enough floor space for a dedicated laundry room. Fortunately, there’s a work-around for this problem: adding a washer and dryer in the bathroom. DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Beaverton, your trusted bathroom contractor, has some tips to optimize limited bathroom space.

Choose Front-Loading, Stackable Machines

Front-loading washers and dryers are a smarter choice than full-size units because they’re stackable. Here’s a tip: to increase your bathroom storage space, you can install extra shelves or cabinets above a front-loading washer and dryer.

Another option is to have your bathroom remodeler install a washer/dryer combo, which takes up less space than a conventional washer and dryer unit. They’re not that popular in the U.S. yet, but they’re common overseas. An all-in-one washer and dryer unit is compact enough to fit under a countertop or inside your closet.

Important note: a washer-and-dryer combo is not without disadvantages, one of which is that they aren’t as efficient as standalone washers and dryers. However, many homeowners with limited bathroom space are okay with this trade-off.

Repurpose Unused Closet Space

There’s also the option of storing your new washer and dryer inside an unused closet. Keep in mind that not all closets can be used to house your washer and dryer. In general, the closet door should be 2 feet 6 inches wide and the closet itself should have a minimum depth of 2 feet 6 inches to 2 feet 9 inches. Alternatively, you can install the washer and dryer under your bathroom counter.

If there still isn’t enough space in your bathroom, you may need to remove unnecessary accessories to free up additional space. Alternatively, you can replace some of the fixtures with wall-hung fixtures to free up valuable floor space. Remember: in a small bathroom, every inch of space counts.

Design Ideas for Small Bathroom

When it comes to interior design, consistency is key. Washers and dryers serve a practical purpose, but they still need to fit into the bathroom design. Here are some other design tips for making a small bathroom look and feel larger:

  • Choose light colors. Light colors reflect natural light, which brightens the mood inside your bathroom and gives the illusion of an airy space. Having trouble coordinating colors? It’s best to choose neutral colors, which complement a wide variety of colors and never go out of style.
  • Incorporate mirrors into your design. Something as simple as installing a wall mirror can help distribute natural light more evenly.
