Choosing a kitchen countertop is a vital part of the kitchen renovation process. The countertop is where cooking and prepping meals is done, but it’s also one of the hardest kitchen features to clean. To reduce your kitchen’s maintenance needs, we suggest choosing a low-maintenance countertop material. Our recommendations include:
Laminate
Laminate is made of a plywood board with a decorative sheet attached to it. Thanks to the nonporous surface, laminate countertops are resistant to water and relatively easy to clean. Nonporous surfaces can’t be permeated by air, water or other fluids. Since fluids—and, by extension, bacteria—can’t penetrate nonporous surfaces, laminate is also easier to sanitize.
Laminate is one of the most affordable options on the market. For tips on maximizing the ROI on your kitchen remodel, consult the kitchen remodelers at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Beaverton.
Solid Surface
Like laminate countertops, solid-surface countertops also have a nonporous surface that’s easy to clean. But unlike multi-layered laminate countertops, the appearance of solid-surface countertops is more homogenous because the material goes all the way through.
Important note: be careful when prepping ingredients on a solid-surface countertop. Knives and sharp utensils can easily scratch the surface. You should also avoid placing hot pans (anything above 250°F) on solid-surface countertops. Otherwise, you risk some deformation.
Recycled Glass
If you’re looking for a heat-resistant and eco-friendly countertop, you may want to consider one made from recycled glass. Recycled glass kitchen countertops are made from crushed glass embedded in clear resin (the same resin used in solid-surface countertops). They’re heat- and stain-resistant, and their smooth, nonporous glass surface can add a sophisticated elegance to any kitchen.
Quartz
If you want to add a bit of personality to your kitchen, most contractors recommend a granite kitchen countertop. Each granite slab has a unique pattern. However, granite stains easily. A low-maintenance alternative to granite is quartz, which comes in a wide variety of patterns and colors.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is probably the most well-known nonporous material for countertops. Despite having minimal maintenance needs, stainless steel countertops last a long time. Designwise, their modern look is best suited to contemporary kitchens. However, it’s also possible to incorporate a stainless steel countertop into a more traditional kitchen design.
