Tips on Designing a Multi-Generational Family Home

A multi-generational home must accommodate the needs of family members of various ages. You can get started by considering everyone’s need for privacy and independence. In this article, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Aiken shares some tips to help you design a multi-generational family home.

Tips to Follow

Improve Accessibility

Whether you have a temporarily disabled family member or a loved one with limited mobility or you’re simply preparing for the changing needs of older adults in your household, it’s important to keep your living spaces easy to navigate.

Accessible remodeling is a must in multi-generational homes. Even if senior family members can get around independently now, it’s worth anticipating any difficulties they may have in the future. Making your spaces wheelchair-accessible is a wise choice. An open-concept plan is usually a good option for this purpose. Arranging bedrooms so that everyone can quickly access them (for example, placing older residents on the main level) allows everyone to stay as self-sufficient as possible.

Maximize the Space

With numerous family members sharing one home, every square foot counts. Get creative with all of the areas in your home. Consider converting underutilized spaces, such as the attic, basement or the space above the garage. You can reduce traffic at the front entrance by adding a side door on the opposite side of the house. Rooms can also be repurposed. For example, a loft can be converted into a playground for little kids or a yoga studio for adults.

Consider an Ensuite Bathroom

It’s common to situate seniors on the first floor so they don’t have to use the stairs so much. Apart from this, you may also add an ensuite bathroom to make things easier and more convenient. An ensuite bathroom is either built into or directly connected to the bedroom. It provides not only privacy but also security. In the middle of the night, older family members don’t have to make long trips to the bathroom in the dark.

Choose the Right Contractor

To meet everyone’s needs, you may need to make structural modifications, layout changes or even build a home addition. It’s best to connect with a professional to help you design and renovate your home to fit your multi-generational family.
