Bathroom Lighting: What to Do?

Bathrooms are one of the most important areas within any home, and need to be well-lit and welcoming. In this post, expert bathroom remodeler DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Aiken will shed some light on making bathroom lighting adjustments.

What to Do

When compared to other rooms in the house, lighting a bathroom is frequently overlooked. However, as bathrooms become larger and more complicated, good bathroom lighting design is critical to maximize the area, whether for yourself or your guests. To get the best lighting, you should:

  • Consider how much lighting you want within the bathroom. As with any project, striking a balance is key to the best results. In this case, take into account how much light is needed within the bathroom. You should also consider warm versus cool light. For improved visibility, bathrooms frequently demand stronger white light.
  • Focus lighting from the top down. This means that you should prioritize lighting the ceiling, then make your way down. Depending on your preferences, you can install flush-mount ceiling lighting or recessed lighting, which are both sound choices for any bathroom remodel.
  • Always choose LED lighting. LED lighting solutions aren’t only energy-efficient, they are also cost-efficient, considering how much value you can get from their stellar performance and versatility. Today’s LEDs have a higher wattage and a warmer light quality than previous generations.

What Not to Do

Bathroom lighting can be tricky, especially when you don’t have a reliable bathroom contractor to guide you through the process. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do about it! As a homeowner, remember that when it comes to bathroom lighting, you shouldn’t:

  • Neglect the proper amount of lighting. Understandably, most people want to avoid making their bathroom feel like a photo studio, but you shouldn’t put fewer light sources in your bathroom or you’ll end up with a gloomy, dimly lit space. The best way to avoid this issue is to install layered lighting. Layered lighting refers to the use of multiple lighting types to efficiently light the whole area.
  • Overlook color temperature and CRI. Color temperature is expressed in Kelvin (K) and describes the color of white light produced by a light bulb or light fixture. As the color temperature of the light source decreases, the warmer (redder) the color of light looks. The cooler (bluer) the light appears, the higher the color temperature of the light source. CRI is a measure of how color-accurate a light source is when compared to a full spectrum source of the same color temperature. So when it comes to creating the perfect vibe in your bathroom, achieving a balance based on color temperature and CRI will improve your bathroom’s overall lighting so it doesn’t feel gloomy and cold or too bright and overbearing.
