Interior Design Principles to Remember

There are no strict rules when it comes to interior design. However, your home remodeler may still recommend following basic principles to ensure a well-designed room. These principles help make your home more cohesive and organized. If you’re planning to give your home a new look, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Aiken, your local remodeling partner, discusses five interior design principles to remember.

Harmony

Interior design elements should complement each other to generate harmony. Your interior should give a sense of serenity and calmness, making you feel more relaxed and peaceful. One way to create harmony is by using one color, even though your forms vary in shape, size and texture.

Balance

Balance is all about equalizing the visual weight of interior design elements. While balance is usually created in shape, it can also be associated with color, pattern and texture. Take note of the three styles of balance:

  • Symmetrical balance. This style is usually found in traditional interiors. It is characterized by the same objects repeated in the same positions on either side vertically. This kind of balance is easy to achieve. For instance, try putting two chairs on either side of a coffee table. However, if you are not careful, this balance can look boring and typical.
  • Asymmetrical balance. This style is more popular these days. The visual weights of lines, colors, forms, and textures are balanced without duplicating everything. It’s more casual but difficult to achieve. It suggests movement, which leads to a more lively interior look.
  • Radial balance. This style is created when all the design elements are assembled around a focal point. It’s not often used in interiors, but it can provide an interesting counterpoint if handled well. A spiral staircase is a good example of this type of balance.

Rhythm

Rhythm is associated with pattern repetition and visual interest. One way to achieve this is by using the same color or shape at different intervals. Rhythm wants you to move your attention around the room. When it comes to rhythm, always remember repetition, progression, transition and contrast. These mechanisms add a sense of movement to your space and lead your eye from one side to another. Your home renovator may suggest incorporating rhythm by using one shade of color in the pillows, mirroring it in a piece of furniture, and bringing it back again in a rug.

Details

Many people overlook the use of detail because they find it boring. However, details play a key role in your interior design. When used right, they can improve the overall look and feel of a room. It’s also important to keep scale and proportion in mind. Scale is the size of one object compared to another, while proportion is the ratio between the size of one part to another.

Emphasis

Emphasis is generally the focal point of a well-designed room. A focal point should be catchy and pleasing enough to encourage the viewer to pay more attention. It must have a lasting impression to anchor the viewer. This principle is an integral part of interior design and can be linked through scale, style, color or theme.

One common interior focal point is a fireplace or a flat-screen TV. If you don’t have a natural focal point in your space, you can create one by emphasizing a piece of furniture or artwork. You can also try painting one area a contrasting color, but be sure to maintain balance at all times.
