How to Add a Laundry to Your Bathroom

A typical laundry area is equipped with a washing machine and clothes dryer. But what if you don’t have an extra room to devote to laundry? Clearing a little space in your bathroom may be the solution. A reputable bathroom contractor shares a few things you need to know here.

Existing Plumbing

When opting for a low-cost laundry retrofit, installing your washer and dryer on the same wall as existing plumbing stacks is the best choice. This may mean fitting the machines alongside or onto the backside of your bathroom wall. Due to the existing plumbing, both the waste lines and water supply are accessible, which makes the modification less expensive.

Stackable Machines

Investing in front-loading machines will give you a full-size washer and dryer option, which can be stacked on top of each other to save floor space. You can also build cabinets or shelving above for additional storage. You’ll need to install a vent to the exterior wall, which, if you have space, can run within the ceiling joists. Otherwise, you’ll have to build a soffit to hide it under the structure.

Combined Machines

A combination unit has both a washing and drying function in a single machine. While its laundry cycle takes longer than usual, the payoff is the lack of need for an exterior air vent. These units are also sized to fit inside a closet or under a counter. If you’re the clean, minimalist type and don’t like seeing exposed appliances, it’s a good idea to conceal the machine behind a door that complements the rest of your bathroom interior.

Closet

If you have a linen closet to spare, turn it into a dedicated laundry area. Before you install the machines, make sure that the closet is spacious enough to fit at least a 2’6” wide door so that the machine doors can be conveniently accessed and fully opened. To fit full-size units, the ideal measurement is close to 3’0″ deep.
