Throwback Remodeling Designs for the Perfect Vintage Kitchen

In the world of design, vintage is taking center stage, particularly in kitchen remodeling. The old-school palettes and patterns of the 60s, 70s and 80s are inspiring some very creative trends in modern kitchens, from woodgrain surfaces and tapered legs to funky wallpaper and tile.

Our design experts at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Aiken recommend getting started on your own retro modern kitchen by incorporating some of the following trends.

Bold Floor Tiles

Remember the jazzed-up tiles in your parents’ or even grandparents’ kitchen? They’re making a comeback in modern design. Make a statement with Moroccan styles and textures to liven up your kitchen floors. Make sure to balance it out with the right wall color to avoid wandering into kitschy territory.

Muted Walls, Pastel Colors

If your floor tiles are loud, your walls should be the polar opposite. Pastel hues have stayed in vogue for kitchen design, even in the current decade, but they can still fit in a mostly retro motif. It’s great to do some custom kitchen cabinet refinishing, but stay clear of natural woodgrain for these cabinets. There’s a fine line separating “vintage” and “dated,” and wooden cabinets tend to cross over the “dated” line. Pair them with a modern countertop material and you’ll be good to go.

Small Kitchen? No Problem

Open floor plans are a product of modern design. If you really want to give a nod to OG kitchens, consider separating the cooking, dining and entertaining spaces. This can make your kitchen look smaller but smaller kitchens are actually a staple of retro homes, and many design concepts from the past work well in small kitchens anyway.

Dining Corners

If you don’t want to part with your open floor space, don’t worry. Instead, dedicate a small corner for a dining nook and furnish it with a retro table and seating. People always want to have a place to sit and relax, even in an open kitchen. You can elevate this design further by choosing built-in benches that double as extra storage space. This helps save you some space while, at the same time, avoiding cluttering your kitchen with too many chairs.

Retro Appliances

Talk to your kitchen remodelers about using vintage appliances to top off your kitchen remodel. Candy-colored refrigerators and an oven range in matching colors are sure to give your pastel walls a pop of color. Don’t forget to use polished bronze faucets to really hammer home the vintage look.
