Ask Your Remodeler These Questions Before Signing a Quote

You’ve found a remodeling contractor who has provided you with a quote on how much a job would cost you and you can’t wait to sign on the dotted line and get the ball rolling. However, before you do so, it’s important to take a moment to examine the quote closely.

A quote is different from an estimate. A quote for a job becomes a contract when it is signed. And just as it’s a good practice to read a contract before signing it, it’s also a good idea to make sure the quote reflects everything you want in your home renovation project. Our experienced remodelers at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Aiken recommend asking your contractor the following questions before signing a quote:

Can I see the spec sheet?

A spec sheet is also known as a “scope of work” document. If your home remodeling contract is a recipe, then the spec sheet is the list of ingredients. It is a detailed and itemized list of all work needed for your project, including specific deadlines for every item. This is the most important part of your quote as it will contain everything your professional will be contracted to finish. It’s also a way to protect yourself against surprise charges and additional costs. Ask your contractor for a spec sheet and double-check that it lists the brands of materials that you chose.

Will this be the final price?

Quotes are a contract, so many homeowners think that its terms are unalterable. But with home remodeling, you may change your mind in the middle of a project. Perhaps the color of the walls is not the same as you saw on the samples, or maybe you found a better set of lighting fixtures for your kitchen, bathroom or bedroom. In this case, the final price of the quote can be modified with a change order. These documents are tacked on at the end of the spec sheet to reflect any changes in the project. Of course, they might also mean that the final price on the initial quote will be different.

What is the timeline for this project?

Reputable home renovation companies will set a specific deadline for completion and stick to it. However, it’s important to get scheduling discussions out of the way before the actual construction begins. This is especially true for families whose daily activities might be affected by the remodel. Don’t hesitate to ask your contractor about projected completion dates so you can plan your project accordingly.
