Home remodeling can be upsetting for pets, given the noise, dust and general chaos associated with it. In this blog, the local kitchen remodelers at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Aiken share a guide on how to keep your pets comfortable during a renovation project.
Cats & Dogs
Pets are not as tolerant of the goings-on during a home remodel as people. The sudden presence of strangers (i.e. remodelers), unfamiliar smells, and the noises that follow can result in erratic actions that lead to injuries.
This is why pets should be kept away from areas where remodeling work is being performed. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends giving your pets a “holiday” by relocating them to a safe space. If only a small part of the house is being remodeled—a bathroom renovation, for instance—then you may only need to move them to a quiet room, kennel or crate far from the remodeling activity.
Your pet will be secluded while remodeling is ongoing, so make sure the room is comfortable and temperature-controlled. Don’t leave pets in a garage, sunroom or on a screened porch. Have their comfort toys with them and make sure they have access to water to prevent dehydration. If they have specific feeding times or need freshly prepared food, set reminders and ensure adherence to this schedule.
Your pets need to be able to take bathroom breaks. Dogs, in particular, should go out every eight hours at the most. Cats should also have access to a clean litter pan.
If your pets have a known history of anxiety or have medical complications that require frequent checkups, consider boarding them at a local animal hospital. You’ll be able to rest easy knowing that your furry loved one is getting the best attention. It will also let you focus on overseeing your remodeling project.
Birds
Birds are sensitive to certain substances often used for remodeling, including adhesives, paint and aerosols. Running an air purifier in the room can help reduce harmful particulates; however, ideally you should consider having your birds stay with a friend, a family member or at a bird-safe boarding center.
Aquatic Animals
Your fish may not breathe air but the substances that can harm birds can enter fish tanks and get absorbed by the water. Under such conditions, the water’s pH level may be affected and become either too acidic or too basic. Either way, it could end up being uncomfortable and even toxic for your underwater pets. Temporarily moving the fish tank to an environment with clean air can solve the problem.
Lastly, make it a point to discuss your pets’ needs with your remodeler before your project begins. Most remodelers are happy to help make remodeling work easy on your pets.
