Finding the Right Edge Profile for Your Countertop

Granite countertops are among the most popular choices for homeowners looking to invest in a kitchen renovation, say top-notch kitchen remodelers including DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Aiken. Slabs made of natural stone add visual uniqueness and can really help make a grand statement in your kitchen.

Common Profiles

Apart from picking out your stone slab and having it professionally installed, however, one important decision that also deserves your consideration is deciding on an edge profile. Choosing a smooth edge assures you of more durability, but can impact style. Let’s look at the various silhouettes to help you decide which edge profile best suits your needs.

  • Classic Ogee — A premium edge, this features a stacked look to achieve a rounded, clean profile.

  • Basic Bullnose — Fully rounded at both the top and bottom edges, this is a very popular edge option that’s best suited to islands or where there’s an extension of the slab past the cabinets, such as a breakfast bar.

  • Triple Bullnose — Also called the waterfall edge, this is an excellent selection for a theme kitchen with regal, extravagant looks.

  • Polished Standard — Arguably the most popular, this is a squared, smoothly polished edge that is great for highlighting thick slabs of stone.

  • Half Bullnose — Rounded on the top but square on the bottom. Homeowners typically use this edge near sinks where the square bottom can prevent water from dripping onto the cabinetry.

  • Double Bevel — A premium edge that emphasizes the thickness and beauty of the natural stone slab with an angular cut.

  • Dupont Apron — Also a popular edge for marble, this highly ornate edge profile is similar to the classic ogee placed atop a classic edge, with a cove-like cut.

  • Dupont Bullnose — Highly stylized for ornamental applications, this edge is similar to a triple bullnose with angular cuts for a different take on the classic design.
